From small town roots to an adult life as an Edmontonian, Lisa understands the value of Public Education. She's an understanding listener who's heard the pleas of parents: to return the schools to some old-fashioned values - values that made Canada great and will keep education great.
There is simply too much push back from both parents and teachers to do anything less than to scrap it. The previous draft curriculum was heavily invested in from many experts, so let's take a step back so that we can step forward with a curriculum that is appropriate for ages and stages of child development. Let's be role models and present curriculum that is self-created rather than littered with plagiarism! Let's ensure our children understand Canada's and our provincial roots - including both proud and condemning history. Let's present curriculum that teaches about politics, but is not politicized in its content!!!
I support safety being treated with a whole-child / person approach. Our world has largely focused on physical safety and a small group of 'experts' that has caused physical, emotional and mental harm to far too many children and staff. I support an individual's choice to wear masks and/or to vaccinate.
There is data from highly accredited and credible sources that is being ignored and censored. Scientific facts relating to the adverse effects of our current and upcoming protocols need to be given equal weighting in our decision making process. Without a full picture, even well-intentioned decisions can cause harm both short-term and long-term.
I support what Canada was founded on: FREEDOM
Freedom of choice .... freedom of expression .... freedom of speech
Because students and their families are feeling threatened with mandatory medical devices and procedures, EPSB is starting to see an exodus of students. If a family decides to pursue other educational options, it MUST NOT be out of FEAR of safety and curriculum concerns!!! Public education is supposed to be a safe haven for all families and students, as well as a fun and enjoyable experience!
We must get back to the very essence that public education was built upon, which means that it is available to ALL children in a fair and equitable way. The division and polarity of our current world needs to stop here and now and return to harmony and respect for each other.
When was the last time you tallied up your energy bills and took an average of the last two years, to determine how much you were going to spend on those same utilities for the upcoming year? Did your energy provider agree with you and simply go along? Sounds a bit absurd, but yes, that is largely the way that public education is currently being funded!
And what about Alberta's policy to subsidize private education with public taxpayer dollars, to the tune of millions of dollars?
We need to find a better way to budget and apportion funds to schools and students! As always, first trim the fat, then find the best ways to use our apportioned dollars, and lastly, if needed, lobby for bigger budgets.
We must find ways through working with the province and parents and guardians, like yourselves, to solidify adequate funding of Public Education and in a proactive manner rather than reactive way.
Mother Teresa knew what she was talking about when she said: "I will never attend an anti-war rally; if you have a peace rally, invite me." We need to weave her wisdom into the words and walls of Public Education.
Where we focus on the negative, the negative grows and gains momentum. Worlds like "ANTI" and "DON'T" and "WON'T" need to be replaced with positively charged words to get the results we really want! For example, I will support "Inclusion" over "Anti-Racism"; "Kindness" over "Anti-bullying".
All children need to feel included and that needs to be taken into consideration too when special recognition is given to one group and not another. We have made inroads with recognizing our brothers and sisters who were the original inhabitants of this land through things such as Orange-shirt Day and our new Truth and Reconciliation statutory holiday, and there are many other cultural groups that need similar recognition to paint a complete picture and provide a complete healing.
While we continue this work of inclusion, we must temper it with an understanding and teaching that our current generation .... our youth .... cannot be held responsible for historical wrong-doing and therefore must be absolved of current teachings that only rip us further apart, such as "Critical Race Theory". Certain movements, if tweaked to be inclusive, would strengthen the fabric of education and community such as adopting and practicing that "All Lives Matter"
Parents must be included too!! I support parental rights. Unfortunately schools have started down the slippery slope of interference with those rights. For example, some are lobbying for "the rights of students to join gay-straight, Queer-Straight, or Gender-Sexuality Alliances in schools WITHOUT parents / guardians being notified. Unless and until parents are willing and able to turn over ALL aspects of parenting / guardianship to schools (including the cost to raise them and making their lunches everyday), parents must remain the caretakers of our children on every level - not just where it is convenient or popular.
Ask yourself: How is it reasonable to expect parents to support the physical, mental and emotional development of their children if the schools have processes and policies in place that EXCLUDE parents from information and decision making processes?
The government currently subsidizes private education to the tune of millions of dollars per year. I have yet to understand this practice so can neither support it's continuance nor it's cessation at this time. I will work to quickly gain a better understanding of this model and how those I am representing would like to see this handled.
Let my 20 years of mortgage brokering experience become the voice of balance for our children and communities. I am very experienced at being the bridge of communication for everyday families - let me continue that work in the space of education.
I welcome your emails of inquiry and stories of triumphs and challenges that your children and families are facing.
